2018 French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem will return to the Argentina Open this week to try and defend the title that he won at this ATP 250 claycourt event in Buenos Aires last year. The World No. 8 hasn't had a good start to the season and managed to win just one of his three matches thus far. In fact, he could not even complete his second round match at the Australian Open as illness forced him to retire in the third set against Alexei Popyrin.
Having recovered now, the Austrian will be eager to get some of his confidence back by playing on a surface that he enjoys the most and is the most successful at.
His biggest challenger will be the second seed and veteran Fabio Fognini. The Italian crashed out of last week's Cordoba Open in the opening round and would be ready to bounce back in Buenos Aires.
Third seed Marco Cecchinato also suffered the same fate as his compatriot Fognini. The Italian was rested during the Italy vs India Davis Cup Qualifier the weekend before but that could not help him as he too went down in his opener in Cordoba. The Argentina Open thus presents the World No. 18 a golden chance to notch up a few wins.
Fourth seed Diego Schwartzman will be carrying Argentina's hopes and will look to ride on the home support to make a strong statement in the second tournament of the Latin American Golden Swing.
