Leylah Fernandez vs Ashlyn Krueger preview
15th seed and home favorite Leylah Fernandez will face USA's Ashlyn Krueger for a place in the third round of the 2024 National Bank Open on Thursday (August 8).
Fernandez has been in good form over the last couple of months. The Canadian has won 10 of her last 14 competitive outings on the WTA Tour, having reached the final of the 500-level event in Eastbourne in June. The 21-year-old also had a respectable showing at the Paris Olympics last week.
The 2021 US Open runner-up made it to the Round of 16 in women's singles before succumbing to 2016 Rio silver medalist Angelique Kerber. She has kicked off her North American hardcourt season on a good note at this week's Canadian Open, overcoming Japan's Nao Hibino 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 to reach the second round at the WTA 1000 tournament.
Krueger, meanwhile, had endured a rough patch since reaching the quarterfinals of the Catalonia Open in May. Up until this week, the American had dropped eight of her last 11 main draw matches on the WTA Tour. The World No. 82 has made amends for her poor form in Toronto, though, qualifying for the main draw of the 1000-level event before beating Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round.

Leylah Fernandez vs Ashlyn Krueger prediction
Although Fernandez was taken to three sets by her first-round opponent at the Canadian Open earlier this week, she gave a good display on both serve and return. The Canadian won 70% of her first-serve points and 63% of her second-serve return points.
Krueger isn't as all-around as Fernandez, but she makes do with her flat playing style. The 20-year-old's forehand is by far her strongest weapon. She uses her long limbs to unleash deep, scorching winners during rallies, which will be something that her older opponent will need to be wary of.
This match-up promises to be entertaining considering how Fernandez plays left-handed. She is the firm favorite to go through to the third round in Toronto unless Krueger comes up with her best tennis.
Pick: Fernandez in three sets.
