Grigor Dimitrov declines offer to be alternate for ATP World Tour Finals

Dimitrov declines offer to be named as alternate

Grigor Dimitrov, ranked 11 in the world, has declined the opportunity to go to London as an alternate. His loss to Andy Murray in the Paris Masters confirmed that he would not be able to take part in the finals as he could not reach the top 8.

Along with the top 8 players, 2 alternatives are named so that in case any of the players get injured the alternate could take over and play instead.

When asked about being an alternate in the event – “If I go, it is because I deserved to be there, not hope someone gets hurt so I get to play," he told L'Equipe. "So no, I don't think it's my thing." The 23-year-old Bulgarian said that he expects to qualify another year. "I just played very well this year and it would be nice to be there," he said going into the match against Murray.

Dimitrov has had a really impressive season as he reached his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon this year. "Next season should be very good for me, considering this year was my best season," he said. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Ernests Gulbis declined the second alternate spot as well, which means that the final 2 alternates named are – David Ferrer (10) and Feliciano Lopez (14 ).
