Emotions ran high on Day 8 at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships with three players in tears after their fourth-round matches. Eight quarterfinal spots have been booked on both the men's and the women's side as the Championships advance towards the final on Sunday, July 14.

For some players, the journey so far has been both hard-earned and impassioned. Here's a look at the players who couldn't fight back tears at the end of Day 8 at Wimbledon.

#1 Anna Kalinskaya retires in pain in Wimbledon 4R matchup against Elena Rybakina

Anna Kalinskaya headed into her match against Rybakina on the back of a straight-sets victory over Liudmila Samsonova in the third round. She started strong by breaking the Kazakh's serve and leading the opening set 3-1. However, Rybakina upped her game, winning the next five games in a row to close the set 6-3 in her favor.

Kalinskaya, who had taken a medical time-out during the first set for treatment of her arms, eventually withdrew from the contest as she trailed 0-3 in the second.

Kalinskaya's boyfriend, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner watched with concern from the player's box as she left Center Court in tears. The tough decision to retire cut short the Russian's deepest run at Wimbledon so far.

Meanwhile, 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina will next encounter Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.

#2 Ukraine's Elina Svitolina wins Wimbledon 4R, voices support for home country in light of Russian attacks

Elina Svitolina earned a quarterfinal spot at Wimbledon with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Wang Xinyu in the fourth round. She fired 8 aces and gave little room to her opponent with only 10 unforced errors.

However, it was not easy for the Ukrainian to take to the tennis court in the wake of a children's hospital in Kyiv being hit by a Russian missile strike. In an on-court interview after her fourth-round win, she teared up as she spoke of the challenging times in her country.

"For sure, it was a good performance from my side today. It’s a very difficult day for Ukrainian people. It was not easy to focus today on the match. Since the morning, it was difficult to read the news. To go on the court is extremely is tough. I’m happy I could play today and get a win," she said.

Svitolina also showed support for her home country by refusing to shake hands with Russian and Belarusian players on the net after her matches. She wore a black ribbon in her match against Wang in solidarity with the victims in Ukraine.

#3 Lorenzo Musetti in tears after reaching his maiden Grand Slam QF at Wimbledon

Lorenzo Musetti came into his fourth-round encounter against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard high on confidence after his victory over Fransico Comesana in the thrird round.

Musetti did not start strong, losing the opening set to his opponent's powerful serves, some of which swooshed past the Italian at speeds of more than 145mph. However, the World No. 25 used his experience to dismantle the French Lucky Loser's game and turn the match in his favor, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

In a post-match on-court interview Musetti felt a surge of emotion on reaching his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinals.

"It's tough for me to get emotional but today I think I will. I have been dreaming about this moment since… sorry… I was a kid, I always had a family, really beautiful family, who always supported me in chasing my dream… It's tough to speak," Lorenzo Musetti said, fighting back tears.

Musetti will next face Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
