Dominic Thiem takes on eighth seed Ben Shelton on Wednesday (April 5) for a place in the Estoril quarterfinals.
The World No. 111 brought up only his second win in 10 matches this year, beating qualifier Sebastian Ofner from a set down. That snapped a four-match losing streak for the 2020 US Open champion, having stumbled in the opening rounds at Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Indian Wells and Miami.
Thiem's only other win this year came at the Argentina Open in Buenos, where he beat Alex Molcan in straight sets. Earlier, the 29-year-old lost in the first round at Adelaide 1 and the Australian Open, as well as both his Davis Cup matches against Croatia. The Austrian is now 1-1 in Estoril, having lost in the first round on his tournament debut last year.
Meanwhile, the 39th-ranked Shelton improved to 7-6 on the season by beating Frenchman Constant Lestienne in straight sets in the first round. It was only his second win in six matches since making a fairytale run to the Australian Open quarterfinals, where he lost to compatriot Tommy Paul.
Since then, the 20-year-old American has lost in the opening round in Delray Beach, Acapulco and Miami and reached the Indian Wells second round. Making his Estoril debut, Shelton is now 1-0 on clay and 10-9 in his young career across surfaces.

Thiem and Shelton look to dominate opponents from the back of the court but are way apart in terms of pedigree and experience, especially on clay.
While Shelton tends to play his best tennis on hardcourts, Thiem was one of the best players on clay before his recent injury. The Austrian - with his signature single-handed backhand - can carve out impossible angles when on song.
Thiem is a two-time Roland Garros runner-up and has won 10 of his 17 singles titles on clay. Shelton, by contrast, is a relative greenhorn but will fancy his chances against his illustrious opponent.
However, despite his wretched start to the season, Thiem should have enough in the arsenal to beat the American left-hander and reach his first quarterfinal since 2022 Antwerp.
