What's the story?

The Fed Cup 2018 is eagerly awaited all over the world and will showcase yet again, some of the best women's tennis in the game. The current tournament is set to feature a host of superstars from the women's game many of whom are currently battling it out for supremacy in the Australian Open.

The Fed Cup 2018 draw was released earlier today, with India being drawn in Pool A of the Asia/Oceania region along with Kazakhstan, China and Hong Kong. Pool B will include Chinese Taipei, Japan, Thailand and South Korea.

In case you didn't know...

The Fed Cup is the women's equivalent of the Davis Cup and will showcase the best women's tennis from around the world with several players representing their respective countries.

The heart of the matter

India have been drawn in a challenging group in the Fed Cup and will have to show real grit and courage to make it through Pool A. Their immediate competitors include China, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong all of whom are more than capable adversaries.

India will most notably be without the services of popular and hugely successful tennis star Sania Mirza who pulled out of the tournament with an ankle injury. In her place, Ankita Bhambri will Captain and coach the team who are looking to make some sort of an impact this year rather than just make up the numbers.

What's next?

India will begin their journey in the Fed Cup at the RK Khanna Tennis Stadium between February 7th and 10th, 2018.

Author's take

India may lack the experience and expertise of Sania Mirza but with young players such as Ankita Raina in the squad, we cannot completely rule out an upset or two from the Indian team.
