German star Haas says 'nein' to America

Tommy Haas admitted today that he once considered playing for the United States, but has remained loyal to Germany.

Haas, the 35-year-old world number 13, has been based in Florida since childhood and became a US citizen in 2010.

With no American man having made it to the third round at Wimbledon for the first time since 1912, Haas was asked if he would represent the US on court.

“I have (considered it),” said Haas after beating Taiwan’s Jimmy Wang to make the third round.

“It’s probably not the right time to talk about it too much. I considered it for a brief second. If you had a German/American flag, I would represent that flag but it doesn’t exist.

“In the long run, I played for Germany for too long. I can’t do that, so…”
