World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will commence his title defense against qualifier Yannick Hanfmann at the Terra Wortmann Open 2025.

Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open crown at the start of the season, though his joy at doing the same was rather brief. He was then suspended for three months in light of his positive doping tests from a year ago. He returned to action in front of his home crowd at last month's Italian Open.
Sinner continued his winning ways to reach the final in Rome, ultimately losing to Carlos Alcaraz. He made an impact at the French Open as well, advancing to his first final at the venue without dropping a set. He found himself face-to-face against the Spaniard in yet another final.
The World No. 1 continued his dominant form to take a two-set lead, though Alcaraz recovered to take the third set. However, when Sinner held three championship points on his opponent's serve in the fourth set, it looked like the title was his. Unfortunately, he couldn't close out the match and eventually lost in five sets.
Hanfmann's grass swing got underway at last week's Boss Open in Stuttgart. He successfully qualified for the main draw but lost to Marton Fucsovics in the first round. He had to go through the qualifiers in Halle as well, beating Yoshihito Nishioka and Nicolas Jarry in straight sets to book his spot in the main draw.

Hanfmann has a 3-8 record at the main draw level this year and he has also lost his last three matches. While he breezed through the qualifying rounds in Halle, he will face a different caliber of opponent in the first round.
This will be Sinner's first match since his heartbreaking loss in the French Open final. Aside from the crushing manner of defeat, it was also his fifth consecutive loss to Alcaraz. He is the only player to beat him in the past 10 months.
Sinner hasn't lost to anyone besides Alcaraz starting with his title-winning run at the Cincinnati Open 2024. He has also reached the final of every tournament he has contested during this period. While Hanfmann managed to take a set from him the last time they met at Wimbledon, the Italian is operating on another level at the moment. As such, he should be able to kick off his title defense without a hitch.
