World No. 55 Alycia Parks and World No. 60 Anna Kalinskaya will lock horns with each other in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open.
With her fabulous performances over the last few months, 22-year-old Parks has emerged as one of the brightest young talents to watch out for on the women's tour.
The American won two back-to-back WTA 125 events at Andorra and Angers to end the 2022 season on a high. She made a breakthrough run at the WTA 250 event in Lyon earlier this year to win her maiden tour-level title. Parks downed the top seed and World No. 5 Caroline Garcia in the final on her way to the biggest achievement of her fledgling career.
However, Parks has managed to win just one match across three tournaments since that triumph and will be eager to bounce back on home soil.
Moscow-born Anna Kalinskaya was a successful junior who won the Australian Open doubles title. However, her transition to the senior circuit has been slower than expected.
It is only in the past one year that the Russian has been making some steady progress on the tour. The biggest highlight of Kalinskaya's 2022 season was her quarter-final appearance at the WTA 1000 event in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The 24-year-old has once again been inconsistent so far this season. Sandwiched between early losses are her runs to the last 16 at the Adelaide International 2 as a qualifier and the quarter-finals of the ATX Open. With the latter being her most recent performance, Kalinskaya will be keen to carry the momentum into Indian Wells.

Although Alycia Parks has briefly gone off the boil following her Lyon heroics, the home support at Indian Wells should inspire her to bring forth her best on the court.
Parks has an excellent first serve and is a powerful striker of the ball off both wings. If she has one of her best serving days, Kalinskaya could be in danger.
That said, the Russian does have it in herself to pack a punch. Her forehand is the biggest weapon with which she will consistently look to produce winners past the American. But the fact that Kalinskaya's serve isn't the strongest element of her game and that she is prone to leaking errors under pressure doesn't bode well for the World No. 60.
