Stan Wawrinka vs Holger Rune preview

Stan Wawrinka will lock horns with seventh seed Holger Rune in the third round at Indian Wells on Monday (March 13).
World No. 100 Wawrinka, playing with a protected ranking, improved to 8-5 on the season with a pair of wins over Alexander Vukic and 26th seed Miomir Kecmanovic this week.
Wawrinka is coming off quarterfinal runs at Marseille (lost to Arthur Fils) and Rotterdam (lost to Jannik Sinner). Earlier, the three-time Grand Slam champion opened his season with a win and two defeats, including a first-round Australian Open exit (lost to Alex Molcan).
The Swiss has a 26-11 record at the first Masters 1000 event of the year, losing to Roger Federer in his last two appearances - 2019 (Round of 32) and 2017 (final).
Meanwhile, the eighth-ranked Rune is now 12-5 on the season after opening his Indian Wells campaign with a straight-sets win over American Mackenzie McDonald. Earlier, the Danish teen made the semifinals at Acapulco (lost to eventual champion Alex de Minaur) and Montpellier (lost to Maxime Cressy), either side of a Round of 16 exit at Rotterdam.
Prior to that, Rune reached the second week of the Australian Open before winning both his Davis Cup matches with India. Rune, who's 2-2 at Indian Wells, is into the third round for the first time.

Stan Wawrinka vs Holger Rune prediction

Wawrinka and Rune are quintessential baseliners, but the latter is not averse to venturing into the net to surprise opponents.
Both players have strong hardcourt games - solid serve, groundstrokes, and good movement. Rune is the bigger of the two servers and is more athletic, but Wawrinka's trademark singlehanded backhand can be a dangerous weapon.
However, since the Swiss is coming off an injury-ravaged year, he might not have enough to topple the young Rune.
Prediction: Rune in straight sets
