Ugo Humbert vs Denis Shapovalov preview

Ugo Humbert will take on 25th seed Denis Shapovalov in an all-lefty clash for a place in the Indian Wells third round.
World No. 77 Humbert improved to 5-3 on the season after beating Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round in straight sets. Two of the Frenchman's four previous wins in 2023 came at the Australian Open, where he lost to Holger Rune in straight sets in the third round. His two other wins came in a Davis Cup clash between France and Hungary.
Humbert has been fairly successful on the Challenger tour this year, coming off a final run at Pau earlier this month, losing to compatriot Luca van Assche in a third-set tiebreak.
Meanwhile, the 30th-ranked Shapovalov has had a lukewarm start to the season, winning only five of his 10 matches. The Canadian is coming off a second-round loss to Taylor Fritz in Acapulco after a pair of opening-round exits in Dallas and Delray Beach.
Earlier in the season, Shapovalov made the quarterfinals at Adelaide 1 (losing to eventual winner Novak Djokovic) and the third round at the Australian Open (lost to Hubert Hurkacz).
Ugo Humbert vs Denis Shapovalov head-to-head
Shapoalov has won three of his four previous clashes with Humbert, so the Candian leads his H2H with his fellow left-hander 3-1. Their last meeting at 2022 Madrid went the way of Shapovalov in straight sets.

Ugo Humbert vs Denis Shapovalov prediction

The two left-handers look to dominate opponents from the back of the court but aren't averse to coming to the net to finish off points.
Both Humbert and Shapovalov are decent movers and serve big, but the Canadian is definitely the bigger of the two servers. Moreover, Shapovalov's single-handed backhand is a potent weapon, as he can find incredible angles for winners.
However, consistency is not the forte of either player, making this a difficult matchup to predict. Nevertheless, expect Shapovalov to make a winning start to his Indian Wells campaign at the expense of his French opponent.
Prediction: Shapovalov in three sets
