Juan Martin Del Potro got his season underway with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky in the Apia International Sydney tournament. The 26-year old broke early to take a 3-1 lead before closing out the set 6-3. The second set was a much tighter affair as both players served well to send the set to a tiebreak. It was Del Potro who came out on top in the breaker.
The defending champion is returning to action after being sidelined by a wrist injury last February. The Argentinian will face top seed Fabio Fognini in the second round. The 2009 U.S Open champion is currently ranked 338 in the world.
