Somdev Devvarman reached 95th in ATP rankings

India’s highest ranked men’s singles player Somdev Devvarman advanced two spots to be ranked 95th in the latest ATP rankings.

The Indian had got the better of two higher-ranked opponents to make it to the main draw of the recent ATP Beijing Open, where he was shown the championship exit door by world number 31 Fernando Verdasco of Spain in straight sets 6-7(6), 3-6.

The Tripura-born lad earlier rallied from a set down to put it across 62nd ranked Robin Haase of the Netherlands 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the first qualifying round match. He went on to slug out 84th ranked Paolo Lorenzi of Italy, once again clawing his way back from a set down to win 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.

The Indian had earlier lost to lower-ranked Matteo Viola of Italy in the first round of the ATP Malaysian Open in straight sets 3-6, 3-6.

Somdev had entered the second round of the US Open, where he lost to Italy’s 20th seed Andreas Seppi. He had ousted Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko in the first round.

The Indian had made it to the main draw of the year’s last Grand Slam event after posting three wins in the qualifying rounds. He accounted for James Ward, Robby Ginepri and Fabiano De Paula in the qualifying phase.

Somdev fared well at the recent ATP Citi Open in Washington, where he upset defending champion and world number 25 Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine in the second round, before being knocked out by the big-serving American John Isner in the third round.

Among the other Indians, Yuki Bhambri, who finished runners-up in the recent ATP Kaohsiung Challenger in Taiwan, after making it to the main draw winning three qualifying rounds, and had surged 190 spots, kept up its upward move, climbing three places to be ranked 284th.

Prakash Amritraj, son of the legendary Vijay Amritraj, slipped five places to 285th.

Saketh Myneni, who won both the Chandigarh and Rohtak Futures earlier this year, dropped a spot to be ranked 302nd.

Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, who won the Coimbatore ITF Futures this year, jumped eleven places to be ranked 316th.

Sanam Singh climbed two places to hold the 357th spot.

N Sriram Balaji, who won the Chennai ITF Futures this year, fell two places to occupy the 457th spot.

Vijayant Malik slumped nine places to hold the 494th spot.
