Latest ATP Rankings: Somdev moves up to 113th, Ankita placed 352nd

Somdev Devvarman

India’s highest ranked men’s singles player Somdev Devvarman climbed two spots to be placed 113th in the latest ATP rankings.

The Indian had performed exceedingly well at the recently-held ATP Citi Open in Washington, where he reached the third round.

Somdev had upset the defending champion and world number 25 Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine in the second round before being slugged out by the big-serving American John Isner in the third round.

The Indian had earlier won the recent McDonald’s mid-Atlantic Open Clay Court Tennis Championships.

Somdev had also earlier reached the semi-finals of the ATP Winnetka Challenger tennis tournament, where he lost to 102nd ranked American Jack Sock 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (5).

He also made it to the semi-finals of the ATP Nottingham challenger tournament.

Somdev also attained a semifinal finish at the ATP Caltanissetta Challenger in Italy, as well as a second-round appearance at the French Open after going through the qualifying route.

Somdev is on a comeback trail after a lingering shoulder injury consigned him to the sidelines for more than nine months in 2012.

Earlier this year, he took on world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round of the Miami Masters and lost in straight sets to the Serb.

Prakash Amritraj, son of the legendary Vijay Amritraj, retained his last week’s ranking of 267th.

Among the other Indians, Saketh Myneni, who won both the Chandigarh and Rohtak Futures earlier this year, was in for a huge disappointment as he slipped twenty-six places to be at 312th.

Sanam Singh was another one to suffer a ranking plunge – dropping fourteen spots to be at 334th.

Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, who won the Coimbatore ITF Futures this year, fell two spots to placed 370th.

N Sriram Balaj, who won the Chennai ITF Futures this year, slumped sixty-eight places to placed 396th.

Among the Indian women, Ankita Raina moved up a notch to be at the 352nd spot and continues to the country’s highest ranked women singles tennis player.

Rishika Sunkara, who not many months ago was breathing down the neck of Ankita Raina, slipped sixteen spots to be ranked 531st.

Nidhi Chilumula jumped five places to be at 592nd.

Prarthana Thombare advanced four places to be ranked 594th.
