Lisicki sets world record at Aegon Classic

Sabine Lisicki at the Aegon Classic 2015

The grass court specialist beat her Swiss opponent Belinda Bencic 6-1 7-6 (7-4) in their second-round game at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, and in doing so broke the existing world record for most aces in a women’s singles match.

With 16 aces in the first set and 11 in the second, Lisicki set a record of 27 – 3 more than the existing world record of 24, held jointly by World No. 1 Serena Williams and Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.

Fresh on the heels of the victory and record, Lisicki has Wimbledon to look forward to. The grass tournament begins on the 29th of June, 2015, and Lisicki was eliminated in the quarter finals of last year’s tournament.
