As was expected Novak Djokovic began his French Open campaign with an easy win in 3 sets over Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker in Round 1. This marks Djokovic’s initiative as he embarks on a journey to dethrone the king of clay Rafael Nadal. He came into the tournament as second seed but many have tipped him to be the favorite given his unbeaten run off late.
Djokovic is also nearing in on another milestone as McEnroe’s 42 match unbeaten run is bound to be broken. The Serbian has now won 38 games on the trot and without much effort, has to be said. Djokovic was hardly trouble in this game as well and defeated Bakker with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
At one stage Djokovic had Bakker on his knees leading the second set 5-0. Bakker was nowhere near Djokovic’s game and his 71 world ranking seemed apt relative to his 2nd. However greater test await DJokovic in this tournament and Bakker just proved too easy.
In the post match interview, Djokovic said that he was feeling confident after the wins at Belgrade, Madrid and Rome. Even though, clay courts are not native to him, he feels at home playing at Rolland Garros.
