Top seed Caroline Garcia will face Alison van Uytvanck in the second round of the Lyon Open on Thursday, February 2.
Garcia had a terrific 2022 season, winning the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and the WTA Finals. The Frenchwoman started the 2023 season at the United Cup where she won both of her singles matches before France were eliminated in the group stage.
Garcia then competed at the Adelaide International 2 and reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champion Belinda Bencic. The 29-year-old then entered the Australian Open as the fourth seed and reached the fourth round before losing to Magda Linette.
She entered the Lyon Open as the top seed and booked her place in the second round with a 6-4, 7-6(4) win over Tereza Martincova.
Alison van Uytvanck, on the other hand, started the 2023 season at the United Cup and won both of her singles matches as Belgium suffered an early elimination after finishing last in their group behind Greece and Bulgaria.
The 28-year-old then competed at the Hobart International and reached the second round before losing to Wang Xiyu. She followed it up with a first-round elimination at the Australian Open after losing 7-6(3), 6-2 to 15th seed Petra Kvitova.
Van Uytvanck then competed at the Lyon Open and booked her place in the second round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tamara Korpatsch.

Garcia will enter the match as the outright favorite to win given her form over the past few months.
The Frenchwoman was very strong on her first serve in her first-round win over Tereza Martincova, serving eight aces and winning 36 out of 51 points. However, her second serve could have been better as she won only 13 out of 33 points.
Garcia's strong groundstrokes and her on-court movement will no doubt be difficult for Van Uytvanck to handle.
The Belgian will look to dominate her service games while looking for the odd decisive break. She will look to make the most out of her effective forehand and net play. Van Uytvanck will have to be at her best and cannot afford to make too many mistakes on the court if she is to beat Garcia.
However, the Frenchwoman has looked in good nick over the past few months and should be able to beat the Belgian to book her place in the Lyon Open quarter-finals.
