In what is set to be his last year as a professional tour player, David Ferrer started his Miami Open campaign with a dominating victory over the American player Sam Querrey. Ferrer won 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the second round.
Right from the start, it was Ferrer who was dictating terms as he broke Querry in the initial stages of the first set to take a quick 3-0 lead. There was no retaliation from Querrey as Ferrer was timing his ground strokes perfectly for winners.
The same dominance continued in the second set as Querrey seemed to have lost his touch, especially on his big forehand. Ferrer capitalized on his opponent's lack of rhythm to get a double break and wrap up the match.
The Spaniard will now face Alexander Zverev in the second round.
Bernard Tomic, who was supposed to face Tomas Berdych in the first round, defeated Brazil's Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 6-1 after Berdych was forced to withdraw from the match due to a back injury.
