2014 US Open: Sania Mirza and Bruno Soares one step away from mixed doubles title

Sania Mirza can add to her Grand Slam tally at Flushing Meadows tonight

Sania Mirza is vying for third Grand Slam title in her career. She has two mixed doubles majors with Mahesh Bhupathi at the 2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open. The Indian with her Brazilian partner Bruno Soares will take on American Abigail Spears and Mexico's Santiago Gonzalez.

This is Mirza’s best showing at the final slam of the year having lost in the last four a year ago. The Hyderabadi lost in the Women’s doubles semifinals yesterday, but her form has been tremendous in New York.

Mirza and Soares beat Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan and Britain's Ross Hutchins 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 on Wednesday, in just over 90 minutes in the semifinal. Their opponents Spears and Gonzalez defeated Donald Young and Taylor Townsend of the United States 6-3, 6-4 to book their place in the final.

This is Mirza’s first pairing with Soares. The Indian has a record of 3-2 in Grand Slam finals and this is her sixth appearance. Mirza and Soares are the No. 1 seeds, while Spears and Gonzalez are unseeded in the tournament.

Spears and Gonzalez had beaten the pair of Cara Black and Leander Paes in the quarterfinals. This is a tough match to call, but the Indo-Brazilian duo are expected to come out on top in a tight match.
