Taylor Fritz vs Jan-Lennard Struff preview

Third seed Taylor Fritz will lock horns with fourth seed Jan-Lennard Struff in the summit clash of the BMW Open in Munich on Sunday.

Fritz has been in top form all week. He has raced to the final having dropped just one set against Jack Draper in the quarterfinal. He followed it up with a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory over claycourt maverick Cristian Garin in his last match.

The run in Munich has seen the American improve his win-loss record for the season to 15-6.

Struff is yet to drop a set this week.

Struff, for his part, has been even more dominant in his run, having won all three matches in straight sets.

The German was particularly impressive in his 6-2, 6-0 dismissal of second seed Holger Rune in the semifinal. With his 13th top-10 win of his career, Struff improved his season’s record to 11-9.

Taylor Fritz vs Jan-Lennard Struff prediction

Frtiz will be the favorite to win on paper.
Frtiz will be the favorite to win on paper.

Neither Taylor Fritz nor Jan-Lennard Struff have had the best starts to the season and a title in Munich would definitely bolster them at the start of the clay season.

Both men possess powerful baseline-oriented games that are better-suited for the quicker hardcourts, but they have managed to hit past opponents effectively all week.

The two share 52 aces between them, with Fritz leading in that department with 31 to his name. They will once again rely on the first serve to win them a fair few easy points, and the pressure will be on the returner.

Struff has been the more effective player in that department, winning well over 60% points on his opponent’s second-serve return. He has also had tougher opponents, including the two-time defending champion Rune and two-time finalist Botic van de Zandschulp.

Playing a final is whole different ballgame, but if he can bring the confidence that he showed in his last encounter, Struff may just have enough firepower to upstage Fritz.

Prediction: Struff to win in three sets
