"A moment I'll never forget" - US Open champ Aryna Sabalenka still in disbelief after conquering New York

Aryna Sabalenka remains in a state of disbelief hours after claiming the 2024 US Open title. She defeated Jessica Pegula to secure her first championship at Flushing Meadows and her third Grand Slam title overall.

The Belarusian started strong, gaining a 5-2 lead, before Pegula leveled the score at 5-5. However, the American could not manage to hold her serve and lost the set 5-7. In the second set, Pegula this time gained a 5-3 advantage, but the World No. 2 broke back to level the set at 5-5. With Pegula serving to stay in the match at 5-6, Sabalenka broke her serve again to secure the victory.

Sabalenka took to X to thank fans for their support. She wrote,

"Can’t believe I did it 🏆 Thank you everyone for you support ❤️"

She also took to Instagram, expressing her disbelief and stating she was at a loss for words. The 26-year-old became emotional while discussing her victory and wrote:

"Still speechless. A moment I will never forget, a feeling that is so hard to put into words. 🥹 Incredibly grateful for all of the support throughout the past two weeks here at the @usopen 🫶 Thank you to everyone who cheered me on, who believed in me and encouraged me to keep fighting 💪 New York has always been a special place to me, but now it takes on a whole new meaning 🏆🐯"

The win marked Sabalenka's second Grand Slam of the year, making her the most successful WTA player at Grand Slams in 2024. She leads Iga Swiatek and Barbora Krejcikova, who have each won one title. The Belarusian has now won three Grand Slam titles, two in Melbourne (2023 and 2024) and one at the US Open (2024).

Following her victory, Aryna Sabalenka disclosed to ESPN her plans to celebrate her US Open title. She jokingly mentioned that she and her team would indulge in a significant amount of drinking.

"We’re probably gonna drink a lot. I’m speechless," Sabalenka said.

The 26-year-old was in disbelief after winning the title in New York. She also recalled the tough losses she suffered at Flushing Meadows before ultimately securing the title. She said:

"I can’t put two words together. I’m super happy. I remember all the tough losses here at the US Open. They say you’re gonna see the reason later. I see the reason right now. I had to go through tough lessons to hold this beautiful trophy. I think I’m the happiest person in the world right now.”

Sabalenka reached the semifinals in 2021 and 2022 and the final in 2023 at the US Open, but ultimately fell short on each occasion.
