The 25th edition of the Chile Open on the ATP Tour will commence on Monday (February 27). While no Top-10 players will take part, we have some quality competitors who will be eager to win the clay-court tournament.
Reigning champion Pedro Martinez has a very difficult title defense as there are quite a few players in the main draw who have fared better than him in recent months.
Lorenzo Musetti and Francisco Cerudnolo are the top two seeds at the tournament and both will be expected to challenge for the title. The likes of Sebastian Baez, Diego Schwartzman and Laslo Djere will also be in the reckoning.
What is the Chile Open?
The Chile Open is an outdoor clay-court tournament that takes place in Santiago. It has been a part of the ATP Tour since 1993 (excluding the Grand Prix years in the 1970s and 1980s), with Argentina's Javier Frana winning the inaugural edition after beating Emilio Sanchez in the final.
Chile's Fernando Gonzalez has won the tournament a record four times while other champions include Gustavo Kuerten and Gaston Gaudio.
Pedro Martinez won last year's Chile Open by beating Sebastian Baez 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
Venue
The ATP 250 event will take place on the Center Court of the Club Deportivo Universidad Catolica, Santiago.
Schedule
The first-round matches in Santiago will take place until Tuesday, February 28. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played on Friday and Saturday respectively, with the singles final scheduled for Sunday, March 5.
Players
World No. 18 Lorenzo Musetti is the top seed at the tournament and will arguably be the heavy favorite to win despite his recent performances being far from impressive.
Francisco Cerundolo is seeded second at the ATP 250 event and will also be among the title contenders, as will last year's runner-up Sebastian Baez, who is the third seed. The likes of Diego Schwartzman, Albert Ramos Vinolas, Laslo Djere and Pedro Cachin are among the seeded players and each of them will look to do well in Santiago.
