Chris Evert reacted on social media to a video of a pet running away during Donald Trump's speech about immigrants eating pets in the USA. Trump made the claims during a debate against presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

On Tuesday, September 10, Presidential nominees Trump and Harris met during what was their first debate. They started with a handshake, a first in eight years of debates between presidential candidates. The two spoke on several topics including national policies, abortion, and immigrants.

One of the talking points from the debate has been the 78-year-old's claims that immigrants are "eating the pets."

Trump said,

"They're eating the dogs, the people that came in, they're eating the cats...They're eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what's happening in our country, and it's a shame."

A video on X showing a pet running away while Trump discussed these claims on TV has nearly 250,000 likes and close to 14 million views.

Evert reposted the video, adding "peeking eye" emojis.

David Muir, one of the moderators, immediately fact-checked the claim, saying it was false. For several days before the debate, rumors have circulated on social media, alleging that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are kidnapping and eating pets. Most of the claims have been centered around Springfield.

The police in Springfield have released a statement quashing the rumors.

“There have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community,” the police statement read.

Trump's running mate JD Vance also took to X to address the issue. He claimed that his office had received "many inquiries" from Springfield's residents stating that their "pets or local wildlife were abducted by Haitian migrants." However, he also said it is possible that "these rumors will turn out to be false."

"“THEY’RE EATING THE DOGGGGSSSSS” took me out"

Serena Williams' husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian meanwhile wrote,

"Gonna hug my dogs extra tonight. No one's gonna eat you guys" .

Ohanian's post was retweeted by Martina Navratilova and Andy Roddick. Both have also promoted Taylor Swift's endorsement of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, which came soon after the debate.
