Coco Gauff has kept up her strong form on clay this season, earning a well-deserved spot in the 2025 French Open final on Thursday, June 5, something she was widely tipped to achieve. Her excitement was clear, and she had a lot to share about how thrilled she felt after the big win.
Gauff arrived at Roland Garros in great form, having finished as runner-up at both the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. She began her campaign with a win over Olivia Gadecki, then went on to beat Tereza Valentova, Marie Bouzkova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Madison Keys to reach the semifinals.
There, the American faced home favorite wild card Lois Boisson, who had pulled off back-to-back upsets against Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva. She didn’t give Boisson much of a chance, capitalizing on the Frenchwoman’s relatively weaker backhand to cruise to a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory.
After the match, Coco Gauff spoke in her on-court interview about what it was like playing in front of a crowd that was almost entirely cheering for Boisson. She admitted it wasn’t easy but said she understood the support for the home favorite.
"This is my first time playing a French player here, actually in this tournament that I can remember. Maybe during COVID, but there were no fans. I was mentally prepared for the match, that it was gonna be 99% for her, but I tried to block it out," she said.
"Actually, when you guys were chanting her name, I was saying to myself my name just to kinda psych myself out. But I think it's an incredible atmosphere here to play in front of this crowd, regardless they are rooting for me or not. I know you guys usually root for me when I am not playing a French, so I love you guys too," she added.
The second seed also had warm words for Boisson, praising her performance and the incredible run she had at the tournament:
"Lois is obviously an incredible player, and for her to have the tournament she had, she definitely proved she is one of the best players in the world, especially on clay. I am sure we will have many battles in the future, hopefully here. I know you guys wanted her to win, but I wanted to win as well. Congratulations to her for an incredible tournament, and today just happened to be my day."
Coco Gauff then looked ahead to the final against Aryna Sabalenka, discussing how she plans to prepare.
"Obviously, playing Aryna is gonna be a tough match, but I think I am just really proud of myself. Yeah, there's still a lot more work to do, but I am just gonna enjoy this one, and tomorrow I will start the preparation for the final," she said.
