Barbora Krejcikova beat Iga Swiatek in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships

Barbora Krejcikova scripted what will probably be remembered as one of the upsets of the 2023 season by beating Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-2 to win her maiden WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The Czech registered her second successive win over the Pole, previously beating her in the final of the AGEL Open in Ostrava last season. She will subsequently climb 14 spots up to 16th in the WTA rankings.

Having previously beaten World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka and World No. 3 Jessica Pegula, Krejcikova became only the fifth woman to defeat the top three players in the world in a single tournament over the past 40 years after Steffi Graf (1999 French Open), Serena Williams (2002 Miami Open), Venus Williams (2008 WTA Finals) and Aryna Sabalenka (2022 WTA Finals).

The Czech's exploits in Dubai will see her earn $454,500 while runner-up Iga Swiatek will pocket $267,690. The total prize pool for the women's tournament is $2,788,468 and the two finalists will earn a combined $722,190 while the semifinalists Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff will each pocket $138,000.
