Emma Raducanu, playing for the first time in over 50 days, produced a convincing win over Danka Kovinic at Indian Wells on Thursday. The Brit defeated Kovinic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Following the victory, Raducanu revealed that she wasn't feeling well and was sleeping in the treatment room before the match. She added that she was proud to have gotten out on the court and won.

"I’m just so happy with the way I fought and dealt with the circumstances. I just woke up feeling not great, to be honest. I felt quite ill so I’m just happy to have played the match and then to win it despite how I felt today," Emma Raducanu said.
"Today, before the match, I did not warm up. Two minutes before I was called, I was sleeping in the treatment room, so I’m just proud to have got out there and then won," she added.

Tennis fans were taken aback by Raducanu's comments and took to social media to express their amazement. According to one user, the whole thing makes the Brit's first win since January even more impressive.

"This makes Emma Raducanu's win in Indian Wells last night - her first since January - even more impressive," the user wrote.

Another user commented that it was amazing how the 20-year-old woke up and went straight to the court without any preparation and still managed to win.

"'Was sleeping.' Girlie really went straight to the court, pulling that shots and let the tennis God does the rest," the user tweeted.

After the 2023 Australian Open, a right wrist injury and subsequently a bout of tonsillitis forced Emma Raducanu to withdraw from several tournaments. The Brit discussed her physical fitness following her win over Danka Kovinic, saying that she is managing it and "trying to get through the tournament."

"They're manageable. I'm not 100% but you never really are. I've just been trying to short-term manage it as much as possible. Just trying to get through the tournament and reevaluate after," Raducanu said, as quoted by Desert Sun.

Raducanu will face Poland's Magda Linette in the second round on Sunday, March 12.
