Matteo Berrettini triumphed at the 2024 Gstaad Open, defeating Quentin Halys in the final. He adorably dedicated the title to his soon-to-be-born nephew.Berrettini had a tough path to his ninth career title. He began his campaign with a win against Pedro Cachin, before defeating Daniel Galan in the second round.In the quarterfinals, he faced his good friend Felix Auger-Aliassime, whom he knocked out in a close encounter, before defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals.The Wimbledon 2021 finalist then clashed with Quentin Halys in the summit clash, and emerged victorious. The Italian did not drop a set en route to the title.During the trophy presentation ceremony, the former World No. 6 dedicated his victory to his nephew, who is going to be born soon."This title is for my little nephew back in Rome that is going to be born tomorrow. Ludovica is going to give birth tomorrow, almost like a sister for me. The persistent injuries meant that he could not deliver consistent performances and build on his run to the 2021 Wimbledon final.In March 2024, he made his comeback and has already won two titles this year - the Grand Prix Hassan II and Gstaad Open. However, he is hopeful of improving his level in tennis.Talking to the press after the semifinal at the Gstaad Open, the Italian said that his level of play has risen considerably. Defeating two top players in Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime helped him increase his confidence."Little by little, I am gaining confidence and I notice that my level of play is rising. Tsitsipas is a great player, but today, I felt stronger than him. It means a lot to me to be playing in this final after so many months of problems. I'm ready again," Berrettini said.Matteo Berrettini will miss out on a berth for the upcoming Paris Olympics as Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi, and Luciano Darderi are the top four male Italian players selected for the event. Jasmine Paolini, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and Lucia Bronzetti are part of the Italian women's contingent for the Paris Olympics.
