Richard Gasquet was moved by the compliments bestowed upon him by Andy Murray as he reflected on feeling fortunate to still be competing on the ATP tour after beginning his professional career back in 2002.
While competing at the 2023 Indian Wells Masters, Murray took the time to compliment Richard Gasquet on his first title after a period of more than four years. The Frenchman defeated Cameron Norrie in the ASB Classic final in January. Murray commended Gasquet for his unwavering passion for the sport, despite not being in his prime, and recognized him as a highly underrated player.
“I was really happy for [Gasquet] when he won the tournament in Auckland earlier this year. I think he maybe sometimes doesn't get the respect he deserves. He's been an incredible player for such a long time and I just love seeing guys that maybe are not at their peak, but they're still out there giving everything, competing because they love the sport," Murray said at the time.
Richard Gasquet is currently competing at the ATP 125 Challenger Arizona Tennis Classic in Phoenix. Following his first-round victory over Emilio Nava, the former World No. 7 expressed his happiness and gratitude towards Andy Murray's compliment on his recent title win and mentioned the mutual respect they shared. Although he has not won as many Grand Slams as Andy Murray or Stan Wawrinka, Gasquet feels fortunate to still be playing tennis professionally.
“Of course I was happy when Andy said that. I’ve known him for a long time, mutual respect,” Gasquet said. “I didn’t win three Grand Slams like [him and Wawrinka], so it’s not quite the same. But I’m very happy and very fortunate to still be on tour.”
Richard Gasquet expresses desire to continue competing on the ATP tour
Richard Gasquet opened up about his desire to continue competing on the ATP tour. He expressed surprise at the length of his tennis career but credited his year-by-year approach and dedication to daily practice and focus for his longevity. He also stated his love for the sport and the enjoyment he derives from playing and competing.
“I didn’t think I could play such a long time, it’s a big surprise to me but I took it year-by-year and I’m still here. I’m practising a lot and thinking about tennis every day. I’m trying to be focussed every day to practise, to play matches, to fight. I really love what I’m doing," Gasquet said. "I really like to play and be on the tennis court. I like to travel and play tournaments."
Gasquet lost his second-round match at the Phoenix Challenger to Aleksandar Kovacevic. He is set to take part in the upcoming Miami Open, scheduled to begin on March 22.
