Alexander Zverev faced a crushing loss against Taylor Fritz in the finals of the Stuttgart Open, after which he shot a backhanded comment at the American on his defeat. This was the fifth consecutive time the 27-year-old had defeated Zverev, with their last meeting being at the ATP Finals last year.
The German was ousted 3-6, 6-7 by Fritz, which gave him a stronger lead of 8-5 in their head-to-head. This loss also snatches away another opportunity of a title from the World No. 3, pulling him further from the hopes of a title win this year.
Even though rain was starting to disrupt the match, Fritz held his strong serves and built a dominant lead early on. Firing 11 aces throughout the match, Fritz overcame Zverev to win his fourth title on grass and his ninth overall ATP title, which would also allow him to topple Jack Draper in No. 4, to reclaim his spot in the ATP rankings.
After the finals, Zverev jokingly asked Fritz to refrain from playing another match against him in the coming years. While concluding his speech at the post-match trophy ceremony, he said:
“And last but not least, Taylor, I’m f****** tired of you. I don’t wanna see you again over the next 2 to 3 years. Please stay away from me. Don’t come to Germany anymore.”
The duo shares a friendly relationship on court, but they faced a controversial moment last year over Taylor Fritz's girlfriend, Morgan Riddle's, post after his win against Alexander Zverev.
Taylor Fritz's girlfriend Morgan Riddle's old controversial post after win against Alexander Zverev

Taylor Fritz's girlfriend, Morgan Riddle, was seen posting a cryptic video of herself after the American won a blockbuster duel against Alexander Zverev in the fourth round of Wimbledon last year.
She has posted a video that indicated her taking a jab at Zverev's unconfirmed reports of domestic abuse by his ex-partners.
"When your man wins 4 the girls," she wrote.
She later took down the post and clarified through her Instagram stories that her intent was misunderstood by fans. Riddle wrote:
"Regarding my stories yesterday... I took them down as I realized the misunderstanding and how blown out of proportion they had become by the media. They were not about anything that's happened off the tennis court & there's no bad blood between anyone."
They will again be seen in action next at the Halle Open.
