Sinner was seen as a strong contender for the title, even though clay isn’t his best surface. By that logic, his opponent had the advantage before the match even began. But he didn’t back down. He fought hard, winning the first two sets. In the end, though, he narrowly lost, with the final score at 6-4, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-7(3), 6-7(2).

After his loss, the Italian poured his heart out in his runner-up speech. He showed why he’s such a great sportsman by thanking the umpires, line judges, and ball kids for making “life easier” for the players. He also joked that he probably wouldn’t get any sleep tonight because of the loss.

“Obviously, thank you so much to put myself in this position. We tried our best today. We gave everything we had, and sometimes ago we would have signed to be here, so still an amazing tournament, even though it's very difficult for now, but it's ok. Thank you so much for all the ball kids, amazing job. You are doing an amazing job. You make life easier for us on court, so thank you so much to you,” Jannik Sinner said.

"To all the line umpires and chair umpires, thank you so much. It's a big privilege for us players to be here, to play here. Paris, for me, is a very special place. Many great things I have achieved, even though I am still happy with this one. It's an amazing trophy. I won't sleep tonight very well, but it's ok,” he added.

The World No. 1 continued:

"The organization for everything, thank you so much for making these events. Such a special event. You make us feel home. You make life easier for all of us, so thank you so much, and obviously, the support has been amazing throughout the whole couple of weeks. You were amazing."
