Former World No. 9 Andrea Petkovic recently expressed her thoughts on Taylor Fritz losing to Jannik Sinner in the 2024 US Open final. She believes although the loss marked a tough moment for the American, it could serve as his "origin story" as a Major winner in the future.
Fritz enjoyed a breakout run at this year's New York Major, beating top 10 players like Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud en route to the title clash. The 12th seed, however, came up short against World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final, succumbing 3-6, 4-6, 5-7 in two hours and 17 minutes.
With the loss, Taylor Fritz's bid to become the first American male player to win a Major in the last 21 years also ended. The 26-year-old looked dismayed right after the match. Andrea Petkovic noticed it and wrote about the same in her Substack newsletter recently.
The German insisted Fritz had his 'mouth contorting' with disappointment as he waited for the trophy ceremony to begin. Furthermore, she claimed if the American was to win a Major title in his career, that moment could be "the moment of his origin story".
"I could see a plan forming in Taylor Fritz’ face after he had lost the final, sitting on the bench, sweat dripping from his hair, the mouth contorting," Andrea Petkovic wrote on Substack. "If he ever wins a major title, this moment right there will have been the moment of his origin story."
Taylor Fritz rises to World No. 7 in the latest ATP rankings
While Taylor Fritz's US Open run ended in agony, he can take pride in his 2024 season on the ATP Tour. The American has accumulated a 44-17 win-loss record thus far, picking up two pro titles in Eastbourne and Delray Beach while finishing runner-up in New York and Munich. His Flushing Meadows campaign, in particular, facilitated his return to the top 10 ATP rankings this week at No. 7.
Apart from the US Open, the highlights of Fritz's year at the Majors came at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, as he made it to the last eight at both tournaments.
He also fared well in this year's ATP Masters 1000 series, reaching the semifinals and the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open, respectively.
