"Iga Swiatek putting a level of fear into players on court that I haven't seen since peak Serena" - Tennis fans stunned by No. 1's dominance

Iga Swiatek has been in formidable form at the ongoing Dubai Tennis Championships. Fans have been left stunned by the spectacular fashion in which the World No. 1 has been demolishing her opponents.

Swiatek had a less-than-ideal result at the Australian Open, where she was knocked out by eventual finalist Elena Rybakina in the fourth round. While the defeat made fans wonder whether the 21-year-old could replicate her 2022 glory, Swiatek has more than risen to the challenge in the days since.

She successfully defended her title at the Qatar Open by ruthlessly crushing each of her opponents (Danielle Collins 6-0, 6-1, Veronika Kudermetova 6-0, 6-1, and Jessica Pegula in the final 6-3, 6-0). And the Pole has carried her dominance into the ongoing tournament in Dubai as well.

In the opening round, Swiatek dismissed 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 6-1.

Her latest victim is World No. 15 Liudmila Samsonova, who has been in commendable form and recently finished as the runner-up at the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open. However, the Russian athlete was shown no mercy by the World No. 1 and was vanquished with a familiar 6-1, 6-0 scoreline.

Tennis fans are amazed by Iga Swiatek’s consistent performance, and many compared her continuing dominance to the likes of peak Steffi Graf and Serena Williams.

"I say this as someone who worships the ground Serena Williams walks on, and watched her entire career as it happened. Iga Swiatek is putting a level of fear into players on court that I haven’t seen since peak Serena. Opponents look genuinely lost and intimidated," one fan remarked.

Another fan was of the opinion that the 21-year-old's supremacy was even greater than that of Steffi Graf, considering the higher quality of competitors in the WTA of late.

"I keep seeing people comparing this to Graf’s dominance. But back in the day the circuit wasn’t that developed and there was a tremendous gap between Graf and the rest of the girls. Now the WTA is much more competitive. So, I think Iga’s accomplishment is even more astonishing," the fan said.

Iga Swiatek is through to the quarterfinals of the first WTA 1000 event of the season, the Dubai Tennis Championships. Swiatek failed to make it past Round 2 of the tournament last year, but has already bettered that this time around.

She will now try to reduce the burden of defending her seven remaining titles from last year by going deep in the WTA 1000 event.

The current World No. 1 has set up a clash against former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova for a spot in the semifinals. The duo have faced off once before, in the 2021 WTA 1000 Italian Open final, where Swiatek crushed Pliskova 6-0, 6-0.
