In a blockbuster match-up, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is all set to take on home favorite and sixth seed Jessica Pegula in the quarter-final of the 2024 US Open on Wednesday, September 4. Since the draw came out, this clash has been projected, and fans have been eagerly waiting for both players to advance to the last-eight stage by winning their respective matches.
Swiatek is yet to drop a set in New York this year. The 2022 champion started her campaign with a victory over Kamilla Rakhimova. The Pole blitzed past Ena Shibahara in the second round, losing just one game in the match. The top seed maintained her dominance when she defeated 25th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-2 in the third round. In the fourth round, the Pole registered another dominant 6-4, 6-1 win over 16th-seeded Liudmila Samsonova.
Jessica Pegula is also yet to drop a set at the US Open. The sixth seed went past two American opponents, Shelby Rogers and former Grand Sam champion Sofia Kenin, in the first two matches. In the third round, Pegula defeated Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. The World No. 6 then defeated 18th-seeded Diana Shanider 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth round to advance to her seventh quarter-final in Majors.
Swiatek has a dominant 6-3 head-to-head against Pegula, but considering the American player's form in the North American swing and with the raucous New York crowd behind her, Pegula has a decent chance of upsetting the top seed. If she wins, it will be her maiden Grand Slam semi-final.
