A prominent tennis journalist recently seemed to poke fun at Andrey Rublev's mental health with a Pep Guardiola reference. This sparked outrage among several tennis fans, who lashed out at the journalist in question.Guardiola, the Manchester City manager who is currently experiencing the toughest spell in his managerial career, was quizzed about a cut on his nose during a press conference in the aftermath of his team's 3-3 UEFA Champions League draw with Feyenoord. Bizarrely, the Spaniard said in response that he had made the cut himself with his fingernail because he wanted to harm himself.Guardiola's response stirred controversy, so much so, that he later had to issue a clarification via social media. Another controversy erupted, this time in the tennis world, after journalist Jose Morgado reshared a video of the Spaniard's initial answer on X and captioned the reshare:"Andrey Rublev would be proud."Jose Morgado making fun of Rublev’s mental health after the incident with Pep Guardiola self harming byu/minivatreni intennisAndrey Rublev has a long history of violent on-court outbursts, and they were all too frequent during the 2024 season. The Russian often hit himself with his racket when matches weren't going his way, and drew blood on multiple occasions. However, he has apologized for his behavior as well, and admitted that he is not proud of it.Unsurprisingly, Morgado's post caught the eye of tennis fans, who perceived it to be a joke made in poor taste about Andrey Rublev's mental health. The journalist later deleted the post, but by this point, it was too little, too late, as fans across both X and Reddit fumed at him.One set of fans defended Rublev, opining that the Russian himself has been remorseful about his outbursts and therefore, does not deserve to be joked about in such a manner."The worst part is that Rublev is absolutely not proud of that behavior, in fact it's probably what he's most ashamed of. Painting it as something he likes to do lightheartedly is just so daft," a fan wrote."This guy’s a joke. Worst part is he deleted the tweet but only because people called him out, not because he grasped the joke was in poor taste. Then he complained people were being mean to him and doubled down like “I know Andrey personally so it’s fine for me to say this," commented another fan."Clown behavior and then he followed it up with “oh you don’t know Rublev like I do and I’m sure he also will find it funny” such a loser," another chimed in.Another set of fans questioned Morgado's credentials as a journalist, suggesting that such behavior does not align with how a journalist should behave."@josemorgado you‘re a miserable f**k," one fan wrote."And he's a professional journalist...," commented another."What an absolute t**t. making "jokes" like this about someone is never okay," weighed in another fan.In October this year, a renowned tennis insider had urged Rublev to seek professional help following the Russian's Rolex Paris Masters outburst."This begs for sports psychology" - Tennis insider after Andrey Rublev lost his cool at Rolex Paris Masters 2024Andrey Rublev at the 2024 Rolex Paris Masters (Source: Getty)Andrey Rublev's frustrations once again boiled over during his second-round loss to Francisco Cerundolo at the 2024 Rolex Paris Masters. During the second set, the Russian's knee started bleeding after he struck it with his racket. In the aftermath of the result, tennis insider Jon Wertheim expressed concern over Rublev's mental health."This is gone from tennis meme to source of serious concern....This obviously goes deep and begs for sports psychology. But if the @atptour code of conduct treated this as harm/abuse - and not self-harm/abuse - maybe there's at least some scoreboard deterrent?" Wertheim wrote on X.Rublev's 2024 season ended at the year-end Nitto ATP Finals, where he lost all three of his Round Robin phase matches against Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud. The Russian ended the year as the World No. 8.
