Jasmine Paolini's spectacular season continues as the Italian confirms her entry into the WTA top 5, ending Jessica Pegula's 90-week run. The Italian has made it into the semifinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
Paolini is having a phenomenal 2024 season where she reached the fourth round of a Major for the first time in her career at the Australian Open. She then won her first WTA 1000 at the Dubai Tennis Championships defeating the likes of Maria Sakkari and Emma Navarro en route.
The 28-year-old stunned the world when she reached the final of the French Open defeating Elena Rybakina, Zheng Qinwen and Mirra Andreeva on her way. This helped her enter the top 10 for the first time in her career.
She has continued her form and has reached the semifinals of Wimbledon 2024 meaning that she will become the new World No. 5 after the tournament. Paolini ousted Sara Sorribes, Greet Minnen, Bianca Andresscu, Madison Keys (retired) and Emma Navarro.
This also means that Jessica Pegula's incredible 90-week run in the Top 5 will come to an end. The American has had a season to forget and it got worse at the grass swing. She skipped the European clay swing due to an injury.
Pegula played the Libema Open where she was eliminated in the second round. The former World No. 3 then had a stunning triumph at the ecotrans Ladies Open but lost to Emma Raducanu in her opening match at the Rothesay International. Her swing ended with a second-round defeat to Xiyu Wang, meaning Pegula lost points from her quarterfinal run last year.
Jasmine Paolini currently sits at 4998 points having gained 770 whereas Jessica Pegula has lost 4665 points, losing 360. The Italian has a chance to increase her tally if she wins further.
Jasmine Paolini will face Donna Vekic in the QF, Jessica Pegula will represent the USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics
Jasmine Paolini will play Donna Vekic in the ladies' singles semifinals. Vekic is a first-time semifinalist in Majors. The two women have met three times in their careers so far with the Italian leading 2-1.
The Croat has been impressive in SW19, downing Xiyu Wang, Erika Andreeva, Dayana Yastremska, Paula Badosa and Lulu Sun.

Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, also participated in doubles at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships alongside compatriot Coco Gauff but the duo fell to top seed Elise Mertens and Su-wei Hsieh in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-1.
Pegula and Gauff will represent Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics next. Gauff will make her debut while Pegula made her Olympics debut at the Tokyo Olympics but was eliminated in the first round in singles by Japan's Misaki Doi.
She partnered with Bethanie Mattek-Sands in doubles but the duo lost in the quarterfinals to Brazilians Laura Pigossi and Luisa Stefani.
