Anna Wintour, a self-proclaimed fan of Roger Federer, was reportedly unimpressed by the “loud” celebrities present at Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz’s US Open 2024 final. “Today” host Jenna Bush Hager, who attended the event with her colleagues Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, claimed that the editor-in-chief of Vogue told the trio to “quiet down” during the match.
Wintour, one of the most powerful figures in fashion, has always been vocal about her fondness for tennis. She has been a regular at tennis events for decades, famously cheering on Roger Federer during his matches. The Swiss maestro’s 2022 retirement, though, hasn’t lessened her appreciation for the racket sport. Anna Wintour, despite her hectic schedule, has made it a point to support the rising stars.
Following her presence at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Wintour graced the recently concluded US Open, supporting the likes of Brit Jack Draper and Italian Jasmine Paolini. She also attended the men’s final between World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and local Taylor Fritz.
Many celebrities attended the final to support their countryman—among them were ‘Today’ show hosts Hoda Kotb, Jenna Bush Hager, and Savannah Guthrie. Recalling their “Sunday date,” Kotb recently said on their show:
"We went on Sunday date with Savannah and we got to watch tennis! It was really fun, it was really fun."
"Tennis is fun. We were loud and annoying. People were…" she continued.
Jenna Bush Hager, meanwhile, revisited their interaction with former player and two-time Grand Slam champion Stan Smith.
"They asked us – Stan Smith of the famed Stan Smith shoes, said to us, ‘You need to be louder.’"
She, however, claimed that Anna Wintour had a contrasting reaction to the trio’s seeming enthusiasm.
"I think Anna Wintour asked us to quiet down," Bush Hager said.
"Shushh," Kotb hilariously gestured.
Taylor Swift was among the celebrities present at Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz's US Open 2024 final
Numerous global figures, including Seal, Andrew Garfield, Mathew McConaughey, Elon Musk, and Patrick Mahomes, graced the Arthur Ashe Stadium for Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz’s US Open final on Sunday, September 8.
Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, NFL's Travis Kelce, also made an appearance. Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb remembered the crowd chanting “Taylor,” seemingly to cheer on the American finalist. The duo revealed their hilarious attempts at establishing a distinction between Taylor Fritz and Taylor Swift by chanting “Fritzy” instead.
"We wanted to make sure Taylor Fritz knew that we were cheering for him, so we were calling him ‘Fritzy,’" Jenna Bush Hager said on the aforementioned show.
Despite overwhelming support from the crowd, though, Fritz failed to clinch a single set during the US Open final. Jannik Sinner emerged victorious with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 scoreline to lift his second Grand Slam trophy of the season.
