Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has chimed in on the men vs. women's sports debate by sharing a throwback video of Serena Williams admitting she would lose to Andy Murray in a hypothetical match. Navratilova agreed with Williams' statement that men's and women's tennis are "completely different sports."

The video was from an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2013. It showed the host asking Williams about the possibility of playing a mixed singles match against Murray.

Williams laughed off the idea, saying that Murray was joking and that she would not stand a chance against him and would lose 6-0, 6-0 to Murray in 10 minutes.

"Andy Murray, he has been joking about myself and him playing a match and I'm like, 'Andy, seriously, like are you kidding me?' Because, for me, tennis, men's tennis and women tennis are completely different sports. So I'm like, if I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose 6-0, 6-0 in like five to six minutes, maybe 10 minutes," Serena Williams said (at 05:33).

Williams also said that men’s and women’s tennis are not the same sport and joked that she did not want to be "killed" by Murray.

"It's true, it's just completely, completely different sport. The men are a lot faster than me and they they get they serve harder," she continued (at 05:57).
"They hit just a different game and I love to play women's tonight. I don't want to play girls because I don't want to be embarrassed. I would not do the tour. I wouldn't do Billie Jean any justice. So Andy, stop it. Yeah, we're not gonna, I'm not gonna let you kill me," Serena Williams added.

Serena Williams and Andy Murray later teamed up for mixed doubles at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. They reached the third round before losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to the top-seeded pair of Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Bruno Soares.

Navratilova shared the clip from the interview on her X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, May 19, and endorsed Serena Williams' stance.

"Yup," Martina Navratilova wrote.

The debate over the differences between men’s and women’s tennis has been going on for decades and has been fueled by various exhibition matches. The most notable example of the same was the"Battle of the Sexes" match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King.

The match was watched by an estimated 90 million people worldwide and is considered a milestone in public acceptance of women’s tennis. The match, which was held at the Houston Astrodome, ended with a convincing victory for King, who won in straight sets and earned $100,000.

Since then, there have been other attempts to settle the men vs. women tennis debate, such as the 1992 match between Martina Navratilova and Jimmy Connors. Connors won the match 7-5, 6-2.

There have also been some exhibition matches such as the 1998 encounter between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. The former, then ranked No. 203 in the world, beat both the sisters in one set each.

However, a fan objected to Navratilova's tweet by reminding her of the 'Battle of the Sexes' match and said that King proved that women can beat men, writing:

Navratilova argued that the 'Battle of the Sexes' was not a fair test of skill, as Riggs was 55 years old and past his prime, while King was 29 and in her peak form. She believes that was thus not a fair representation of the men vs. women tennis debate. Navratilova replied:

"It’s Billie, not Billy, and Bobby was simply too old. You are making a really bad argument."

Martina Navratilova lauded Serena Williams for paving the way for mothers to excel as athletes

Martina Navratilova has previously praised Serena Williams for being a role model for women players to continue and excel in their careers after giving birth. She believes Williams will inspire more women to do the same.

In a CNN interview in 2022, Navratilova highlighted that women previously had to choose between tennis and motherhood, but Williams has shown they can pursue both simultaneously.

"For women it was either-or, but now Serena proved you can have both," Navratilova said. "There are plenty of other mothers on the tour who have done really well. The biggest reason we didn’t see it – there are a couple – the care wasn’t there, the money wasn’t there, and also women just chose to have babies and then they didn’t come back."

"But now I think Serena kind of paved the way for motherhood and to still be an athlete. I think you will see more and more women playing well into their 30s, maybe into their 40s," she added.

Serena Williams gave birth to her first child Olympia in 2017, and then went on to reach four Grand Slam finals (2x Wimbledon Championships, and 2x US Open). She also reached the 2019 Australian Open quarterfinals, and the 2020 US Open semifinals, before retiring at the latter tournament three years later.
