The Tampa Bay Times, an American newspaper which is published in St. Petersburg, Florida, reported that there were numerous deaths of workers in the state as a result of the scorching heat. These workers worked in roofing, packing, and fruit harvesting, all of which exposed them to the intense heat and humidity of the region.

Earlier this year, Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law that prohibited cities and counties from implementing protections for workers who faced harsh and hazardous heat conditions in Florida.

Earlier this year, in January, children from low-income families in America became eligible for the Summer EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) program. This initiative provided $120 in grocery store funds for each child.

However, the Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis chose to opt out of this federal program and in turn denied much-needed assistance to the children from these vulnerable families.

The Miami Herald reported that Florida's decision to decline federal aid meant that approximately 2.1 million children from low-income families would not receive the additional support to help cover their grocery expenses.

Reacting to this news, former World No. 1, Martina Navratilova took to social media to condemn Governor Ron DeSantis. She criticized him and called him "cruel" and "despicable" for depriving children in Florida of the federal program funds that could have helped them purchase essential food items.
