Martina Navratilova was one of the most dominant women's singles tennis stars of the 1980s. A fan has unearthed an old photo of Andre Agassi's ex-wife and actress Brooke Shields sporting Navratilova’s iconic t-shirt from the 1981 US Open, leaving the former World No.1 impressed.
Navratilova established herself as the new face of women's tennis starting in 1981. Fresh off of multiple Grand Slam victories in 1979, the American stormed to the singles title at the Australian Open and WTA Tour Finals. She was also crowned doubles champion at Wimbledon and the Tour Finals.
At the US Open in 1981, the tennis star was seeded fourth and beat first seed Chris Evert in the semifinals, ending the latter's streak of six consecutive finals in New York. Navratilova eventually fell to third seed Tracy Austin in a tightly contested final.
Recently, a fan found a photo of Andre Agassi's ex-wife, actress Brooke Shields wearing Martina Navratilova's famous US Open outfit. The American player reshared the picture.
“Omg- never saw this photo before. My shirt and Brooke in the 80’s- how cool:)” Martina Navratilova tweeted.
While Navratilova dominated the women's singles world of tennis in the 1980s, Agassi emerged as a star of the men's singles world a little over a decade later.
Martina Navratilova on Andre Agassi's crystal meth divulgence
Throughout his career, Andre Agassi won eight major titles and was crowned the Olympic champion in 1996. In 2009, three years after his retirement, he published his autobiography, where he revealed that he had lied about a failed drug test in 1997. He wrote that he made up a story about unknowingly drinking a soda that his assistant had spiked with crystal meth, to avoid a drug ban.
Reacting to this, Martina Navratilova called the incident "shocking" in a 2009 phone interview from Sarasota, Florida.
"Shocking. Not as much shock that he did it as shock he lied about it and didn't own up to it. He's up there with Roger Clemens, as far as I'm concerned. He owned up to it [in the book], but it doesn't help now. Andre lied and got away with it. You can't correct that now. Do you take away a title he wouldn't have won if he had been suspended? He beat some people when he should have been suspended," she said.
Navratilova won 18 major singles titles, 31 major women's doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles, and was ranked World No. 1 for 332 weeks.
