Taylor Townsend recently expressed appreciation towards fans who have backed her and World No. 1 partner Katerina Siniakova at this week's WTA Finals. The American also inferred that the pair will give their best and aim for silverware in the championship match of the doubles competition at the year-end championships.
The eighth-seeded pair, who won their first Major title together at SW19 this year, have displayed immense resilience in Riyadh. Townsend and Siniakova went 3-0 in their round-robin matches before beating the team of Veronika Kudermetova and Chan Hao-ming in the semifinals in straight sets.
Following their last-four victory, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova gave a shoutout to their fans via a video. The 28-year-old American expressed excitement at the prospect of playing the championship match of her first-ever WTA Finals. She also joked that the occasion may not be that big for her Czech partner, who has successfully qualified for the doubles competition at the year-end event since 2018.
Townsend also claimed that the team wasn't "done yet". They will face Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe in a rematch of their 2024 Wimbledon title clash.
"What's up everybody, it's Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova - World No. 1. We are into the WTA Finals here in Riyadh," Townsend said. "We are so excited, this is my first time. This is her 29th, who knows! But we're super excited, continue to support us, we're not done yet."
Townsend is currently ranked 9th in the WTA doubles rankings, having achieved a career-high of No. 3 in the world last year. Siniakova, meanwhile, is the top-ranked player in doubles. The Czech has won nine Major titles, completed the Career Golden Slam in women's doubles, and also secured gold in mixed doubles partnering Tomas Machac at this year's Paris Olympics.
Taylor Townsend gets mistaken for Coco Gauff at WTA Finals 2024
Earlier this week, Taylor Townsend shared on her social media handle that she and her friend Simeon Kelley Jr. were mistaken for World No. 3 Coco Gauff and rapper Travis Scott in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
"Starting the day off with a bang guys. So I was outside the hotel, and people stopped us saying you are Coco," Townsend said on her Instagram stories. "And they stopped Sam, and they said Travis Scott! We know you are from somewhere. And John is wearing his hat, look at me, look at me, turn, oh my god!"
Townsend will be going for the second biggest title of her career at the WTA Finals later on Saturday (November 9). Aside from her Wimbledon title, the American also won last year's Cincinnati Open partnering with her countrywoman Alycia Parks.
