Paula Badosa amused by Frances Tiafoe's girlfriend Ayan Broomfield going through emotional rollercoaster watching American in action at US Open

Paula Badosa recently expressed her amusement as Frances Tiafoe's girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, was captured expressing her emotions at match point during Tiafoe's US Open third-round match against Ben Shelton.

In a match that lasted over four hours and was filled with a rollercoaster of emotions at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday, Frances Tiafoe emerged victorious 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3. Facing Shelton, it was also a rematch of the 2023 US Open quarterfinal, where Tiafoe was knocked out.

After the match on Friday, the US Open's official Instagram account posted a reel featuring Ayan Broomfield squatting in her seat, then emotionally standing up and in tears when Tiafoe scored match point.

A few hours after the post was made, WTA star Paula Badosa expressed her amusement and affection in the comments section, adding a couple of laughing and heart-eyed emojis.

Frances Tiafoe and his girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, have been dating since 2015, and she has often accompanied him to various tournaments on the ATP tour. Broomfield also played on the WTA tour and was ranked No. 467 in doubles in 2014.

Meanwhile, Paula Badosa is having her best-ever run at the US Open since making her debut in the main draw in 2019. So far, she has defeated Viktorija Golubic and Taylor Townsend in the first and second rounds. In the third round, she beat Elena-Gabriela Ruse to set up a Round of 16 clash with Wang Yafan.

Frances Tiafoe's next opponent at the 2024 US Open will be Australia's Alexei Popyrin, and it will be their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Before defeating Shelton, Tiafoe won against Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round, and in the second round, Alexander Shevchenko retired due to medical reasons, giving Tiafoe a walkover.

The American entered the US Open in fine form, having reached the final of the Cincinnati Masters, where he was defeated by World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Back in April, Tiafoe also reached the final of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships but lost to his compatriot Shelton in the final.

On the other hand, Alexei Popyrin is having the best season of his career, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 23 in early August. He also clinched the third title of his career and his first Masters 1000 title at the 2024 Canadian Open.

Reaching the fourth round of the US Open is the farthest Popyrin has gone in a Grand Slam since turning pro. Before setting up the clash with Tiafoe, he defeated Kwon Soon-woo in the first round and Pedro Martínez in the second round. He outclassed defending champion Novak Djokovic in the third round.
