Coco Gauff, Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro, Jessica Pegula, and Desirae Krawczyk lost in the Paris Olympics 2024 as American women once again returned home without a medal. It has been a poor showing from the American women for the second Olympics in a row.
Touted as one of the biggest medal hopefuls, Coco Gauff entered all three draws in search of a medal. In singles, the World No. 2 started strong with a win against Ajla Tomljanovic and Maria Lourdes Carle but lost to Donna Vekic in the third round in a match surrounded by controversy.
In mixed doubles, she partnered with Taylor Fritz and the duo defeated the Argentine pairing of Nadia Podoroska and Maximo Gonzalez in the first round. However, they lost to Canadians Gabriela Dabrowski and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, she continued her successful partnership with Jessica Pegula but could not make it past the second round, where they lost to the first-time pairing of Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova. Gauff/ Pegula defeated Ellen Perez and Daria Saville of Australia in the first round.
Pegula won her first-round singles match against Swiss Viktorija Golubic but lost to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Elina Svitolina in the second round.
Danielle Collins' campaign came to an end on July 31 when she lost her singles and doubles match. In singles, she had a good campaign, reaching the quarterfinals, from which she had to withdraw because of an injury.
She defeated Laura Siegemund (walkover), Caroline Wozniacki, and Camila Osorio before retiring mid-match against Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals, which also saw a controversial ending.
Collins partnered with Desirae Krawczyk in doubles but they lost to Ukrainians Lyudmyla Kichenok and Nadiia Kichenok in the second round.
Emma Navarro's challenge ended in yet another controversial match against Zheng Qinwen in the third round. Earlier, she had defeated Julia Grabher and Viktoriya Tomova in the first and second rounds.
This is the second Olympic in a row that American women failed to enter the medal rounds. Madison Keys at the 2016 Rio Olympics was the last American woman to play in the semifinals. She, however, could not win a medal as she lost in the semifinals and also the bronze medal match.
Serena Williams remains the last US woman to win a medal at the Olympics in singles at the 2012 London Olympics. She won the gold medal, defeating her rival Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1. She also won the doubles gold medal, partnering with her sister Venus Willams.
Coco Gauff's controversial line call at the Paris Olympics 2024

Coco Gauff's match against Donna Vekic was embroiled in controversy as the American was unhappy with a line call. After the match, she told the media that the controversial calls going against her had become a pattern, as was the case against Serena Williams.
"I feel like I’m getting cheated on constantly in this game, it happens to me, it happened to Serena [Williams]. I don’t think the ref disagreed. I think he just thought it didn’t, like, affect my swing, which I felt like it did," Gauff told the media (via The Athletic).
She said that she had to stand up for herself against such calls multiple times this year.
"There have been multiple times this year where that happened to me where I feel like I always have to be an advocate for myself on the court," she said.
Coco Gauff also called for the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) in tennis.
