Serena Williams returned to Flushing Meadows on Sunday, September 1, to watch Grigor Dimitrov play against Andrey Rublev in the fourth round of the US Open. She was in attendance at the Arthur Ashe Stadium yesterday as well to watch Jannik Sinner take on Christopher O'Connell.
Williams was spotted in attendance at the Arthur Ashe today to watch her 'good friend' Dimitrov go up against Rublev. The US Open's official X account posted a video of the 23-time Grand Slam winner in the stands and wrote:
"Serena is back in Ashe to support good friend Dimitrov!"
The 42-year-old entered Flushing Meadows on Saturday, August 31, for the first time since her final match at the New York Major two years ago. She posed on the tournament's iconic blue carpet wearing a denim skirt and a jacket 20 years after her iconic Nike denim skirt kit debuted at the US Open.
Serena Williams was in attendance at the Arthur Ashe to watch Sinner's third-round win over O'Connell. She also met Iga Swiatek behind the scenes and left the Pole star-struck.
"It was really nice to see Serena Williams, she has a lot of positive energy" - Iga Swiatek on meeting American at US Open 2024
Ahead of her third-round clash against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Iga Swiatek met Serena Williams in the gym. Later, the Pole went out at the Arthur Ashe and defeated the 25th seed Russian 6-4, 6-2.
In her post-match press conference, Swiatek opened up about her meeting with the six-time US Open winner. She said that Williams has a lot of 'positive energy' and she still leaves her star-struck.
"It was really nice to see her. She has a lot of positive energy... It's nice that she came on-site and she was chatting with the players, because for me, yeah, I still felt, even though we met before and for like couple of years we have been on the same sides and on tour together, she's still like star-striking [sic] me," Swiatek said.
Further, the Pole mentioned that it was 'nice' of Williams to approach her because she would not have found the 'courage' to do so herself.
"I'm happy that she's following tennis and my game, because she told me that she's cheering for me. It's always nice to hear that from somebody like Serena," she added.
Up next for the World No. 1 is 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the fourth round of the US Open.
