Serena Williams revealed that her decision to retire was driven by her desire to spend more time with her family. In August 2022, she bid goodbye to tennis after playing her last match at the US Open, where Ajla Tomljanovic defeated her in the third round.

After marrying entrepreneur and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in 2017, she gave birth to their first daughter, Olympia, that same year. Then, in 2023, the couple welcomed their second child, Adira.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in July 2024, the former world No. 1 shared that her decision to retire wasn’t due to any fitness concerns. She expressed her love for being part of the sport and mentioned that she still stays connected to it. However, she chose to step away because she wanted to spend time with her family.

"I love watching it,” the 43-year-old said. “I love playing it. I love being a part of it. I’m still really good at it. [Laughs.]. I always say the reason I stopped was not because of injury. It was because I wanted to have a family.”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion mentioned that she would miss the sport more than an ‘average person’ because she knows she still has so much left to compete at a high level.

"That was a very hard decision to have to make when you know you can still play and perform at a very high level, and then have to say no [to that part of yourself], because you want to have a future and leave a mark. I think if I didn’t have that, maybe I wouldn’t miss it as much, but because of the way I had to depart, maybe I do miss a little bit more than the average person," Williams said.
