Stefanos Tsitsipas extended his condolences to the victims of the train collision tragedy that occurred in the Greek city of Larissa late at night on Tuesday, February 28.

Two trains, one passenger and one cargo, collided head-on, throwing the carriages off the rails, killing at least 38 people. Most of the carriages shattered on impact and one caught fire, adding to the panic and havoc created by one of the deadliest train crashes in the country's history. Many of the victims were students who were returning from the carnival in Athens after a long holiday weekend.

Rescuers have been on the scene for the past two days and Greek flags have been flying at half mast in Athens as the government declared three days of mourning.

Stefanos Tsitsipas took to social media to stand in solidarity with those affected by the deadly incident.

"Today we woke up to the devastating news of a tragic train crash that has left us all in shock and sadness. Our hearts ache for the families and loved ones who lost their dear ones in this horrible tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences to them and stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time," he wrote.

"Today we stand together as one nation, united in our grief and determined to support each other through this difficult time. Let us honor the memories of those who were lost by coming together in love, compassion and strength. May God bless Greece and its people," he added.

Stefanos Tsitsipas had a great start to his 2023 season with wins at the United Cup, where he took Team Greece into the finals. The Greek also reached his second career Grand Slam final at the Australian Open.

However, the World no. 3 made an early exit at the Rotterdam Open, falling to Italian Jannik Sinner in straight sets. He later revealed that he has been struggling with a shoulder injury that he sustained at the Australian Open. He recently withdrew from the Mexico Open currently underway in Acapulco due to the injury.

"It is with great disappointment that I must announce my withdrawal from the 2023 Abierto Mexicano de Tennis in Acapulco due to a shoulder injury I sustained after the Australian Open," he posted on social media.

The 24-year-old added that he would miss competing in Mexico.

"Mexico is one of my favourite destinations in the world, and I have always cherished the opportunity to compete in this prestigious tournament," he said.

Tsitsipas has not yet confirmed his participation at the upcoming Indian Wells Open or the Miami Open, both scheduled to begin in March.
