Taylor Fritz won his first Masters 1000 title at the BNP Parisbas Open (Indian Wells) in 2022 after defeating Rafael Nadal in the final. Speaking to the press ahead of the 2023 edition of the tournament, the American shared that he was raring to have a go at defending his title.

"I think just being here, I have a sense of confidence knowing that I play well here. I was just excited when I got here, excited to just get on the practice court, start feeling it again, get that feeling that I'm playing good and confident, kind of just ready to go," he said.

He reflected on his progress over the past year, noting that he had climbed from being ranked World No. 20 to World No. 5 since his last appearance in the tournament. He stated that he had higher expectations of himself this time around.

"I think last year when I came in here I was ranked [No. 20]. I think I had just broken into the Top 20 for the first time, I was at my career high. Obviously now coming back here a year later I'm ranked No. 5. As a player, I'm a lot different and I have higher expectations for myself," the American said.

Fritz acknowledged that his mindset has shifted since his last appearance at the tournament. He admitted that he did not have high expectations of winning before, but now that he has achieved it, he sees it as a real possibility.

"I think last year coming into this tournament I wasn't even coming in thinking I was going to win. Now, obviously once you do something once, now it's always a possibility. I'm a much improved player with higher expectations. Winning last year gave me a lot of confidence."

Taylor Fritz will begin his title defense by taking on Ben Shelton in the second round of the tournament.
