Christopher Eubanks had his big breakthrough at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. The American announced his arrival on the big stage by making it to the quarterfinals of SW19 as an unseeded player.
However, the period since that memorable run, which included wins over the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Cameron Norrie, has not been easy for him.
Eubanks has hardly won back-to-back matches in the 12-month span, and his ranking has plummeted from a career-high No. 29 in July last year to No. 128 now. He even failed to defend his Wimbledon quarterfinal showing, losing in the first round this time around.
In a recent interview with ATP.com, the American outlined his up-and-down road since Wimbledon 2023. He admitted to winning the odd good match but highlighted the difficulty of stringing together a series of those good results.
“After Wimbledon, I felt like I didn't have to worry about those two weeks,” Christopher Eubanks said. “Because after Wimbledon, I played the US Open and I think I won one in Shanghai, but I didn't win many matches after that.”
“You don't think about it much. But at the beginning of this year I got a good win in Australia and then I didn't win many matches,” he added.
Eubanks, however, maintained that he felt like he was a better player than 12 months ago. He went on to say that with this year's edition of Wimbledon behind him, he felt a weight lifted from his shoulders, ready to refocus on the upcoming challenges.
“I feel like I’m a better player than I was a year ago, but I just can’t get any wins,” the American said. "There’s a lot of ground to make up, and that’s the most exciting thing for me.”
“Now that the weight has been lifted, I can find my form and play my way. At least I have the opportunity to play my way and be in good shape. I think the future looks bright,” he added.
"Excited about what next few months have in store" - Christopher Eubanks puts Wimbledon setback behind him
Christopher Eubanks has already put his Wimbledon setback behind him and is upbeat for the remainder of the season.
The American, buoyed by his recent run to the semifinals at the Hall of Fame Open, his first of the year, reiterated his confidence in achieving the level that saw him surge to a career-high ranking last year.
“I am very excited about what the next few months and the rest of the year have in store for me,” Eubanks said. “I truly believe that I can find the way I found last year to get back to where I know I can be. At the end of the day, I just have to keep working and trust that I will achieve it”
Eubanks beat Ethan Quinn and Aleksandar Vukic en route to the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Open before losing a three-set battle to Marcos Giron.
