Barbora Krejcikova suffered another shock first-round exit at the French Open on Sunday (May 26). The Czech player has now lost three consecutive first-round matches in Paris after winning the title in 2021.
In the past few years, Krejcikova has gotten the better of the likes of Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. However, she has had a surprising dip in form at the only Grand Slam she has won in her career.
In 2021, she defeated Sloane Stephens, Coco Gauff, and Maria Sakkari on her way to the title. For the next three years, she faced shock defeats in her campaign openers in Paris.
Since winning her maiden Grand Slam, Krejcikova has achieved a quarterfinal finish once at the US Open and twice at the Australian Open. Although she has achieved extraordinary success in other categories, winning seven Majors in doubles and three in mixed doubles, her singles form is questionable.
After her 7-6 (3), 6-4 loss to Viktorija Golubic, an X (formerly Twitter) account uploaded an image of Krejcikova's recent form.
Several fans were "sad" to see her "decline."
"This decline has been sad to see and so abrupt. Feels like just yesterday, she was the top challenger against Iga," one fan wrote.
"It was painful to see her play in an empty stadium too," another fan wrote.
"And after beating Swiatek, Sabalenka, Pegula consecutively in 2023?? We love our flop queen but come on Barbie WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU," a third fan wrote.
Some fans were not surprised to see her decline.
"This is only disappointing given how well Barbie K can/did play. However, after RG21 I don’t think many of us would have expected her to make three more Grand Slam quarter-finals," one fan wrote.
"Barbie really cursed herself when she said in 2022 that she wanted to be seen as a threat / not to be underestimated in the French open because…. Lmao," another fan wrote.
One fan claimed Jelena Ostapenko could relate to the decline and wrote, "Penko can relate."
Although Ostapenko won her first-round encounter at the 2024 French Open, she has not gone past the third round since winning the title in 2017.
Barbora Krejcikova's French Open campaign continues in the doubles event with Laura Siegemund

Laura Siegemund and Barbora Krejcikova will participate in the women's doubles event at the 2024 French Open. The pair is fresh off a runner-up finish at the Madrid Open.
At the Australian Open this year, they were defeated by Storm Hunter and Katerina Siniakova. All of Krejcikova's Grand Slam doubles titles have come with Siniakova as her partner. But the pair decided to go their separate ways in 2023.
Barbora Krejcikova and Laura Siegemund will face Katarzyna Piter and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova on Wednesday (May 29) in the first round in Paris.
