Carlos Alcaraz's impassioned celebrations during his dominant win over Facundo Bagnis in the second round of the 2023 Miami Open drew criticism from tennis commentator Craig Shapiro.

Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed a commanding victory over Facundo Bagnis, defeating the Argentine 6-0, 6-2 in a mere 65 minutes. The Spaniard only lost seven points in the first set and quickly raced to a 2-0 lead in the second set. Despite a brief setback when Bagnis broke his serve, Alcaraz dominated the proceedings and made a strong start to his title defense in Miami.

Craig Shapiro, known for his popular podcast, 'The Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast', was in attendance at the match. Shapiro was critical of Alcaraz's excessive celebrations while dominating and deemed them to be in "bad form."

"So odd, Carlitos fist pumping and Vamosing like a madman up 6-0 2-0. Unnecessary. Bad form," Shapiro posted on Twitter.

The American added that while he would usually appreciate a "properly-timed" celebration, he found the timing of Alcaraz's behavior to be inappropriate and intractable.

"I enjoy a properly timed fistpump. The fist pumping at 8-0 is out of control and inappropriate," he added.

Shapiro further continued his criticism of Carlos Alcaraz's "hyper" intense celebrations, opining that they were "odd" to watch in person and "very lame."

"Very lame and odd to watch in person. Crazy hyper intense, didn’t lose a point on serve in the 1st set. Was a wicked blowout. Was like watching a cyborg looking for the adolation of his master."

The American even shared a video he had captured of Alcaraz during the match which showed the World No. 1 celebrating winning a point with a fist pump, which Shapiro, personally, considered to be ridiculous.

Carlos Alcaraz will take on Dusan Lajovic in the third round of Miami Open 2023

Following his win over Facundo Bagnis, Carlos Alcaraz stated that he was happy with the level he displayed, especially due to the difficulty in making adjustments to the widely different conditions between Indian Wells and Miami.

“I knew that I needed to be focused for my first match. To start a new tournament is never easy, [and in] different conditions. I have to be ready to get used to these new conditions, but I was really focused on the match from the beginning, and I’m happy with the way that I played. I try to improve every day,” he said in the post-match interview.

Speaking about the difference in court conditions, the World No. 1 added that the court in Miami was faster while the weather conditions were more humid.

“The court is faster, there is more humidity,” he added.

Carlos Alcaraz will next take on Dusan Lajovic in the third round of the 2023 Miami Open. The Spaniard has won each of their three previous encounters on the ATP Tour.
