Venus and Serena Williams' childhood coach Rick Macci recently revealed how US President-elect Donald Trump fares as a tennis player. Macci also laid bare Trump's strategy when it comes to doubles.
When it comes to sports, it's no secret that Donald Trump loves golf. However, he has also played tennis in the past, and according to veteran coach Rick Macci, Trump brings several positive qualities to the tennis court. Macci himself shot to fame as the coach of Jennifer Capriati and went on to train the likes of Venus and Serena Williams, Andy Roddick, and Maria Sharapova as well.
Recently, the iconic coach took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote about Donald Trump's tennis game. Rick Macci claimed that Trump had "huge" forehands, backhands, and serves.
"Was asked to describe Donald Trump tennis game back in the day. Forehand huge. Backhand huge. Serve huge," Macci wrote.
The 69-year-old went on to elaborate on the US President-elect's doubles strategy. According to Macci, Trump would always pick the perfect partner for himself to excel in doubles.
"His Strategy in doubles was world class as he 100% always picked The Best Partner," Macci concluded.
Interestingly, Trump once played tennis with none other than the legendary Serena Williams.
Donald Trump and Serena Williams played a couple of points in 2015
2015 saw Donald Trump inaugurating a tennis center within the premises of the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia. At the time, Williams was 33 and the reigning WTA World No. 1, and she was invited by Trump to hit the ceremonial first serve at the then-newly-opened tennis center. Trump himself was on the other side of the court.
Williams won the first point, but it was Donald Trump who clinched the second. However, the common perception was that Williams had intentionally let Trump win the second point.
At the 2015 US Open, Trump was in attendance for the quarterfinal clash between Venus and Serena Williams. It turned out to be a thrilling encounter as the legendary sisters played out a three-setter, which Williams won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. However, the occasion was marred by Trump getting jeered by many in the crowd at the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Controversy erupted in May 2024 after Williams became surprisingly involved in Trump's hush money trial. As per reports, the legendary tennis star emerged as one of the President-elect's frequent contacts based on emails dating back to 2017. When asked about it later on during a podcast appearance, the 23-time singles Major champion refused to divulge details of her relationship with Trump.
